- Guangzhou: Prefer hotels near Tianhe / Zhujiang New Town if flying into CAN and working downtown; match rail arrivals to Guangzhou South vs city stations.
- Shenzhen: Pick Futian / Nanshan / Luohu based on meetings or border plans — the city is wide.
- Move: Metro QR + DiDi; do not assume one hotel covers both GZ and SZ on the same night without a transfer plan.
2. Metro & pay
- Transit QR via Alipay/WeChat is the default tourist path (enable the correct city in-app).
- Expect bilingual signage in core lines; still keep visual signs habits.
- SZ and GZ are not one metro ticket universe — re-plan when you change cities.
3. Climate delta
- Hot, humid summers; sudden downpours.
- Pack light rain shell + phone waterproofing; electronics hate steam.
- Indoor malls are valid heat shelters (same as any Tier-1).
4. Hotels
National registration rules apply. Business districts (Tianhe, Futian, Nanshan class areas) have more foreigner-ready front desks. Small budget places: ask 可接待外宾吗 first (Stay beyond hotel).
5. Cross-border awareness (not a how-to)
Shenzhen sits next to Hong Kong. Entry rules, visas, and e-channels differ by passport.
Do: Read your own visa/permit docs + official HK/mainland sources.
Don’t: Assume 144-hour / visa-free tricks apply without checking your nationality and route.
6. First 24h checklist
- Correct airport/station on tickets
- Hotel district matches tomorrow’s plan
- Transit QR works
- Cash + QR both tested
- Rain plan if forecast storms
