🏙️ City Delta: Guangzhou & Shenzhen

Plain English

Same national apps and passport hotels. South China adds heat, heavy rain seasons, huge rail/air hubs, and (near Shenzhen) border-adjacent trip planning.

Treat GZ and SZ as two cities — do not assume one hotel covers both casually.

Scope: Guangzhou · Shenzhen · multi-city

地铁站在哪里?
dìtiě zhàn zài nǎlǐ?
Where is the metro station?

TL;DR: Metro + Alipay still primary. Pack for heat/humidity. For Hong Kong side trips, check your visa/passport rules separately — this page is mainland runtime only.

Prerequisites: Landing Protocol · Money Runtime · Visa & entry

Problem

Travelers bounce GZ ↔ SZ on short HSR hops and under-budget weather, luggage humidity, and “which airport/station” confusion.

📋 The Runbook

1. Airports & stations (orientation)

City Common gateways (examples) Runtime note
Guangzhou CAN airport; Guangzhou South rail South station is a long metro/taxi from old town — budget time
Shenzhen SZX airport; Futian / North rail nodes City is wide; pick hotel near the side you actually use

Action: Match hotel district to first meeting / first tourist node, not “city name only.”

First-night corridor (Guangzhou / Shenzhen)

2. Metro & pay

3. Climate delta

4. Hotels

National registration rules apply. Business districts (Tianhe, Futian, Nanshan class areas) have more foreigner-ready front desks. Small budget places: ask 可接待外宾吗 first (Stay beyond hotel).

5. Cross-border awareness (not a how-to)

Shenzhen sits next to Hong Kong. Entry rules, visas, and e-channels differ by passport.

Do: Read your own visa/permit docs + official HK/mainland sources.
Don’t: Assume 144-hour / visa-free tricks apply without checking your nationality and route.

6. First 24h checklist

🚨 Fallback (Plan B)

Issue Move
HSR sold out GZ–SZ Full trains earlier/later; bus as last resort; avoid random drivers
Flooded streets / typhoon signal Indoor day; delay intercity; follow local metro notices
Hotel refusal CBD international chains
Heat exhaustion risk Malls, metro AC, oral rehydration from convenience stores
Need English medical International clinics in Tier-1 cores — see Hospital access
