🏠 Stay Beyond Hotel: Short-term Rental & Rejected Check-in

Plain English

Hotels must register foreign guests with police. Some small hotels refuse foreigners. Apartments and homestays need the same registration idea — just messier.

Always have a Plan B international chain and your passport in hand.

Scope: national

可以接待外宾吗?
kěyǐ jiēdài wàibīn ma?
Can you accept foreign guests?

TL;DR: Confirm 外宾 (foreign guest) acceptance before arrival. Passport must be scanned for temporary residence registration within 24 hours. If refused, pivot to international chains or platform rebooking — do not sleep unregistered.

Prerequisites:

Problem

“Hotel full” sometimes means “we cannot process foreigners.” Long-stay and homestay hosts may not know how to register you. Unregistered stays create police risk for you and the host.

📋 The Runbook

1. Before you book (filter hard)

  1. Message host/hotel: 可以接待外宾吗?需要护照登记。
  2. Prefer listings that explicitly say foreigners OK / 可接待外宾.
  3. For first night after a long flight: default to international brand (Hilton / Marriott / IHG / Hyatt / Accor class) even if pricier.
  4. Save two backups within 3 km with free cancellation if possible.

2. Standard hotel (recap)

Follow Hotel check-in: passport scan → temporary residence registration → keep confirmation. Digital passport photos are not enough.

3. Homestay / short-term apartment

  1. On arrival, ask who registers you with police (host vs you vs property manager).
  2. Typical good path: host takes you to 派出所 (local police station) or uses a licensed property system with your passport.
  3. Provide: passport bio page, entry stamp/visa page, phone number, address of stay.
  4. Verification: You receive a registration receipt / host confirms system success; you can stay without being asked to “just hide.”

[!WARNING] If a host says “no need to register, it’s fine” — treat as red flag. Either fix registration same day or leave.

4. Longer rentals (weeks–months) — field outline

Not full legal advice; practical order only:

  1. Use reputable agents or branded apartments used to expats.
  2. Contract in writing; note deposit (often large), payment schedule, inventory list with photos.
  3. Confirm who does police registration and Wi‑Fi real-name setup.
  4. Gate/fob access: get two keys/cards if possible.
  5. Verification: You can enter building after 22:00 without host present; registration done within 24h of move-in.

5. Night-of refusal protocol

  1. Stay calm; ask reason: system? license? full?
  2. Call booking platform support (in-app) for free rebooking / refund.
  3. Open map → filter international hotels → book refundable if possible.
  4. Official taxi / DiDi to new address only.
  5. Verification: New booking confirmation + successful passport registration at new desk.

🚨 Fallback (Plan B)

Situation Action
Small hotel refuses foreigners International chain within city core; platform rebooking
Homestay cannot register Move same day to licensed hotel
Arrive 01:00, everything closed Airport hotel / 24h business hotel brands near rail/air hubs
Host demands cash-only no ID Walk away — high scam/risk profile
Dispute over deposit Photos of room at check-in/out; platform dispute within policy window
Long-stay falls through Weekly-stay hotel apartment brands as bridge

Plan B brand mindset (examples, not endorsements): major global chains + well-known Chinese business hotels that routinely scan foreign passports in Tier-1 cities.
