Plan milk, diapers, sleep, and transport with kids before peak hours. Malls often have nursing rooms.
Many tips are national; Shanghai examples appear where useful.

TL;DR: Never land without a 72-hour supply buffer. Use Hema/Freshippo for trusted formula. High-speed rail: kids <6 are free but must share a seat. Transit nodes feature hidden staircases; keep a baby carrier ready.
Prerequisites:
- Child’s Passport: Physical original required for all hospital/hotel registration.
- Supply Buffer: 3 days of diapers and formula (redundancy against delivery delays).
- Offline Card: A physical card in the child’s pocket with your phone number and hotel address in Chinese.
📋 The Runbook
1. Buying Formula & Supplies
- High-Trust Nodes: Buy ONLY from Hema (Freshippo), Ole’, CitySuper, or Sam’s Club.
- Delivery (30-60 min): Use Meituan or Ele.me (Search:

- Current Status: The affected batches ( NAN, BEBA, Lactogen) from late January 2026 have been cleared. However, always run check on older or hotel mini-bar stocks.

2. The Pediatric Routing (Medical)
- Step 1: If your child has a fever > 38.5°C, head to Jiahui International Hospital (Shanghai) or the VIP Wing (Te-xu / 特需) of a public pediatric hospital.
- Step 2: Say: “Értóng fārè ménzhěn zài nǎlǐ?” (Where is the pediatric fever clinic?).
- Verification: Ensure you have the child’s physical passport. Digital copies are often rejected at the registration window.
3. Transit & Mobility SOP
- Step 1 (High-Speed Rail Ticket Rules): Children under 6 years old travel free of charge, but they must share a seat with an accompanying adult (no separate seat allocated).
- Action: If you want a dedicated seat for your child to nap or play, you must purchase a Child Ticket (usually 50% discount) when booking.
- Step 2 (Metro & Station Barriers): Do not use standard e-gates. Go to the Manual Lane on the far end. Station staff will wave strollers and carriers through.
- Step 3 (Bottle Prep): Verify the presence of the 100°C Boiling Water Node (located at the end of every carriage on high-speed trains) for sterilizing bottles.

🚨 Fallback (Plan B)
If your luggage (with all supplies) is lost:
- The “Global Node” Strategy: Head to CitySuper or Ole’ Supermarket. They carry premium European/US brands (Pampers, Hipp, Aptamil) at a 40% markup, but quality is guaranteed.
- Medical Emergency outside SH/BJ: If in a Tier 3 city, use Baidu Maps search for
三甲医院(Grade A 3-Star Hospital). These are the most capable public hospitals. - No Power Bank: If your phone dies and you can’t scan a power bank, go to the nearest Luxury Hotel Front Desk. Even if you aren’t staying there, they will usually let you charge for 10 minutes at a “Power Hub.”
💡 TechDad’s Tips
- Didi & Taxi Car Seats: Child seats are virtually non-existent in Chinese ride-hailing fleets. Didi does not offer a child seat option. If you are not bringing a portable travel vest or car seat, the Metro and High-Speed Rail are significantly safer transport mediums.
- Safe Havens (母婴室): High-end shopping malls (like MixC, IFC, or Taikoo Hui) have premium nursing rooms equipped with hot water, diaper changers, and private feeding stalls. Many malls also feature indoor play areas (children’s play centers) on upper floors—excellent air-conditioned sanctuaries during hot/rainy seasons.
- Social Landscapes & Environmental Prep:
- Crowd Warmth: Chinese locals are incredibly warm towards foreign children. Expect people to wave, take photos, or interact. If you are uncomfortable with photos, politely say “Bù hǎoyìsi, bù zhào xiàng” (Sorry, no photos).
- Noise & Smoking: Chinese environments can be loud (loud talking, speakers). Outdoor smoking is still common near restaurant entrances and streets. Keep your carrier high to avoid street-level smoke.
- Humid Summer Heat: July/August is extremely wet and hot. Pack small portable USB stroller fans and light UV-blocking stroller covers.
