🏙️ City Delta: Beijing
Same national stack (Alipay, passport hotels, 12306). Beijing differs in airports, longer metro rides, embassy density, and winter AQI/cold.
Use this as a delta sheet — not a full guidebook.
Scope: Beijing · multi-city
TL;DR: Pick the correct airport (PEK vs PKX). Metro + Alipay still rule. Build extra time for security lines at major stations. Bookmark your embassy on day one.
Prerequisites: National setup done: Landing Protocol · Money Runtime · Public transport
Problem
Shanghai-first habits (short metro hops, Bund mental map) fail in Beijing’s scale. Wrong airport transfer and winter air quality are the usual surprises.
📋 The Runbook
1. Airports
| Code | Name (concept) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PEK | Capital | Often closer mental model to “classic Beijing” |
| PKX | Daxing | Long transfer to many hotels — budget 90–120+ min door-to-door |
Action: Confirm which airport is on your ticket before booking hotel shuttles. Use official taxi queue or DiDi — same black-cab rule as Shanghai.
First-night corridor (Beijing)
- Airports: Confirm PEK vs PKX on the ticket before booking a hotel transfer.
- Default first night: CBD / Guomao / Sanlitun-class business hotels (passport desks used to foreigners).
- Move: Official taxi queue or DiDi from the correct airport — budget 60–120+ min door-to-door from PKX.
2. Metro & pay
- Alipay / WeChat transit QR works on Beijing Subway in normal tourist flows (confirm in-app city).
- Expect longer walks between lines; follow 换乘 signs early.
- Peak hours are hard with luggage — allow slack.
Verification: Generate transit QR while on airport Wi‑Fi once.
3. Hotels & registration
Same national passport registration as Hotel check-in. In hutong / small guesthouses, re-confirm 外宾 acceptance — refusal risk similar to other heritage districts.
4. Embassies & documents
Beijing has the densest consular footprint. If you need visa runs, lost-passport work, or legalisation:
- Star your embassy on maps day one.
- Check appointment systems — walk-ins may not exist.
- Carry paper copies; see Lost passport.
5. Weather / AQI delta
- Winters: dry cold + heating indoors.
- AQI spikes: mask in bag; see weather habits from Shanghai weather guide mental model (check local AQI apps/widgets).
6. First 24h checklist (Beijing)
- Airport identity correct on tickets
- Hotel Chinese address + metro line known
- Transit QR tested
- Embassy pinned
- Cash ¥500+ (Money Runtime)
🚨 Fallback (Plan B)
| Issue | Move |
|---|---|
| Landed wrong airport assumption | Recalculate DiDi time/cost; do not “cheap black car” |
| Metro QR fails | Staff ticket machines with passport where supported; or taxi |
| Small hutong hotel refuses | International brand inside 3rd Ring as bridge |
| Bad AQI day | Indoor museums / malls; N95 for sensitive travelers |
| Need urgent consular help | Embassy duty phone from Emergency contacts pattern — verify current number |
💡 TechDad’s Tips
- Palace / peak tourist nodes: same tea-scam awareness as Safety & scams.
- Rail stations (Beijing stations are huge): arrive earlier than Shanghai habits.
- English levels vary more outside CBD — phrase cards matter.
