⚖️ Long-stay Risk Boundaries: Banking, Work & Status

Plain English

Staying months is not the same as being a tourist for a week. Work, local bank accounts, and “my friend will sort it” create real legal and account-lock risks.

This page marks red lines and safer patterns. It is not legal, tax, or immigration advice.

Scope: national

I need to consult a professional.

TL;DR: Tourist / visa-free entry ≠ work rights. Foreign-card Alipay ≠ full mainland banking. Do not stake rent, salary, or school on informal “workarounds.”

Prerequisites: Visa & entry · Money Runtime · China App Stack · Stay beyond hotel

Problem

After 30–90 days, people hit walls: phone number expiry, inability to open local accounts, landlord demands, client payments, and immigration status grey zones. Forum tips age badly.

📋 The Runbook (boundary checks)

1. Status vs activity

You may assume Reality check
“I’m remote for a foreign company, so it’s fine.” Host-country rules may still treat local work or certain activities as regulated — verify for your nationality and visa type
“Visa-free days are for anything.” Entry purpose and permitted activities are not identical across categories
“I’ll just overstay a few days.” Overstay is a hard risk (fines, exit trouble, future visas) — plan exit before day N

Action: Keep a calendar of must-exit / must-extend dates. Set two reminders (7 days and 48 hours prior).

2. Banking boundaries

Pattern Risk Safer pattern
Rely only on one foreign card in Alipay Mid-trip KYC / decline Second card + cash buffer (Money Runtime)
Use someone else’s mainland account Account freezes, disputes, compliance issues Pay with instruments in your name
Expect easy local bank account as tourist Many branches refuse short status Plan without local CNY account unless advised by bank + your documents support it
Crypto / P2P grey cash-in Scams + compliance Stick to official card rails you understand

3. Phone number & account lock-in

Long stays often burn a tourist SIM. When it dies:

4. Housing & registration

5. “Work permit / invitation” conversations

If anyone offers:

Treat as red flag. Use licensed counsel / employer mobility teams — not Telegram fixers.

6. Monthly long-stay health check

🚨 Fallback (Plan B)

Pressure Move
Status days running out Exit or lawful extension path — do not gamble
Primary card dead Second card + cash; reduce spend; insurer/employer wire only via official channels
SIM dead, apps locked Hotel Wi‑Fi + passport appeals; do not buy random “unban” services
Landlord dispute Platform mediation if any; written evidence; consulate list is information not free lawyer
Job offer appears mid-trip Pause start date until status is lawful for that work

What this page deliberately does not do

When money or status is material, pay for professional advice in your jurisdiction and China’s.
