Alipay & WeChat Pay Setup for Foreign Visitors
| Last Updated: Mar 2026 | Author: TechDadShanghai |
Problem
Cashless payment is nearly universal in China. Without Alipay or WeChat Pay, you cannot pay at most restaurants, taxis, convenience stores, or buy metro tickets. Foreigners have historically faced friction — but as of 2023–2026, both apps have significantly simplified the process.
The Two-App Strategy
| App | Best For | Foreign-Friendliness |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay (支付宝) | Shopping, metro, bikes, delivery | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Dedicated international flow |
| WeChat Pay (微信支付) | Restaurants, WeChat mini-programs, transfers | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Works once card is linked |
[!TIP] Set up both apps. Some merchants accept only one or the other. Having both is your payment redundancy layer.
Part 1: Alipay International Setup
Since 2023, Alipay supports a dedicated international visitor flow — no Chinese bank account required.
Step 1: Download & Open
- Download Alipay from your local App Store.
- Open → Select “International Version” or it will auto-detect your region.
Step 2: Register
- Enter your foreign phone number (your home country number works for registration).
- Receive SMS verification code → enter it.
- Set a 6-digit payment PIN.
Step 3: Bind International Card
- Go to Profile → Bank Card → Add Card.
- Enter Visa or Mastercard details (credit or debit).
- Complete 3D-Secure verification (SMS to your home number).
- Spending limit: International cards have a per-transaction limit (typically ¥5,000 / ~$700). For large purchases, multiple transactions may be needed.
Step 4: Test Before You Fly
- Send a small transfer to yourself or a friend using the app.
- Or simply buy something small on AliExpress (linked ecosystem) to confirm the card works.
Common Errors:
| Error Message | Fix |
|---|---|
| “Card not supported” | Try a different Visa/Mastercard; some prepaid cards are blocked |
| “Verification failed” | Ensure 3D-Secure is enabled on your card (call your bank) |
| “Limit reached” | Standard per-day limit; ask hotel/merchant for alternative method |
| App in Chinese only | Tap the globe icon or check Settings → Language |
Part 2: WeChat Pay Setup
WeChat Pay is embedded inside the WeChat app. You must set up WeChat first.
Step 1: Register WeChat
- Download WeChat → Register with your foreign number.
- You will be asked to have a friend verify your account (a WeChat user who has been registered for 6+ months must scan a QR code to approve you). This is a one-time friction point.
- Workaround: Ask a colleague, hotel staff, or use an existing Chinese contact.
Step 2: Enable WeChat Pay
- In WeChat → Me → Services → Wallet.
- Follow the card-binding flow (similar to Alipay).
- Visa and Mastercard are supported; American Express support is inconsistent.
Step 3: Using WeChat Pay
- For in-store payments: Me → Pay → Show QR Code to the cashier.
- Or scan the merchant’s QR code: use the “Scan” function on the home screen.
Using Both Apps at the Metro & Bikes
Metro (Shanghai)
- Alipay: Search “Metro” → Generate transit QR → Scan at gate.
- Apple Wallet (iPhone): Add Shanghai Metro Card → Tap and go (Express Mode, no unlock needed). Note: requires compatible iPhone model (check Support Apple page).
Shared Bikes (HelloBike / Meituan)
- Alipay → HelloBike mini-program → Scan bike QR → Ride starts automatically → Alipay charges on return.
- Buy a 7-Day Unlimited Pass (~10 RMB) for stays of 3+ days.
Backup: QR Code Screenshot (Zero Data Needed)
If your VPN or data fails:
- Open Alipay → Go to “Pay” → Take a screenshot of your QR code.
- Show the screenshot to the merchant → most POS terminals can scan a static QR.
[!WARNING] Your Alipay QR code rotates every 60 seconds for security. The screenshot trick only works if the cashier scans it quickly. Use it as a last resort.
Miles’ Tips
- Do This Before You Land: Bind your card at home where your 3D-Secure SMS arrives instantly. In China, international SMS can be delayed 5–10 minutes.
- Cash Buffer (Always): Carry ¥500–1000 (RMB) in small bills. Some street stalls and rural taxis might have payment system issues. Small convenience stores are your cash-to-small-change converters (buy a drink at FamilyMart).
- App Coupons: Inside Alipay, check supermarket mini-programs (Hema, ALDI) for “New User” coupons — often ¥10–20 off.
- Payment Declined? Try switching between Alipay and WeChat Pay before assuming the card is blocked. Network timeouts cause false declines.
